Why discriminate against external law degrees?
August 07, 2008 Thursday, 01:24 AM

I AM currently enrolled in a private law school pursuing an external LLB law degree from the University of London. I am aware that, despite the efforts put in to attain such a difficult degree, it will not eventually be recognised as a practising law degree in Singapore.

I can see it now: a FT from Bangladesh as a High Court judge - imagine the cost savings!

to begin with, foreign universities are only legal to operate in Singapore, and not endorsed by the *erm* governmental ministries. so you study with those universities at your own risk. depends on the job market demand ,they always say...if the job markets' saturated with graduates like yourself, good luck to you. moreover, when was the last time you read in the mainstream media that our "foreign" operated university had made any impact on our local economy or social significance?

It's called the Board of Legal Education, not "Legal Board". Any aspiring lawyer should at the very least verify all his facts (however minor) before writing to a public forum.

Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise for us that Mr Singh might have to ply his trade elsewhere.

#4,Any aspiring lawyer would also know that the Board of Legal Education is also referred to as the "board" and as Mr Singh was addressing a wider audience here, there was no harm in referring to it as the Legal Board. Any potential lawyer worth his salt would not attempt to discredit another potential on trivial legalese.

This guy has to learn to differentiate between an "external British law degree" and a proper "British law degree". They are obviously not the same. Those with proper British law degrees are apparently welcome to practise law in Singapore, and there are many practising lawyers with non-external British law degrees in Singapore today.

Only lawyers with First Class from select British and American universities are allowed to practise in Singapore. From NUS, at least a Second Class Upper is required. I understand that this is to maintain the quality of our law industry.

As for this question of Delvinder's: "Will the Legal Board in Singapore do anything to correct this flaw, or wait until its best lawyers are forced to ply their trade elsewhere?", I am very sorry but Singapore's best lawyers do not need to hold external British law degrees. You can do a profile search on them on the Internet and see where they got part of their education from.

You are deluded to think that it is a case of job protectionism for the NUS law grad from the external law degree grad. Their jobs do not need to be protected. The calibre of the NUS law grad is highly recognised and respected throughout the legal world, with Magic Circle and New York firms taking in NUS law grads. What needs to be protected is the quality and integrity of the law profession in Singapore from any Tom **** and Harry who takes an external law degree and thinks he's hot s**t.

Can I ask Mr Delvinder Singh why in the first place wasn't he enrolled in NUS Law? Or Cambridge? Bristol? Nottingham?

Cannot get into the good law programmes, then now want to pretend that he is good enough.

External law degree my foot! Like a wise woman once said: IF YOU ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH, LIFE WILL KICK YOU IN THE BALLS.

You got an ego problem dude, deal with it! You are not that good after all!

492sac, to practice in sg, you need a second lower min, from nus. dunno if it is extended to smu, i'd guess so.
