IN ARGUING 'Why there is no need for a by-election' on Wednesday, Mr Lionel De Souza's reliance on Section 24 (2A) of the Parliamentary Elections Act is a non sequitur.
As the ancient Roman saying goes, the people basically need two things: bread and circuses. The by-election is basically going to be a circus. When to mount a circus to take the people's mind off certain things is an art. Timing is what it is about - not money.
The govt is well known to be very legalistic about things.
But apparently not so when it comes to a vested interest that being legalistic would seemingly put them at a disadvantage. Of course, a lot of citizens know only too well that it is so only when its convenient to their purpose to be so.
Any by elections are for a greater good. Money expended is always worthwhile. The ruling party must face audit by the people (through elections).
This will keep any minister and/or mp on their toes because they know that they will be sacked by the people anytime if they fail to perform.... This is what they always tell us.
They should have a by-election. They should not fear; they must have the courage and let the new PAP candidates fight on their own rather than hide behind a heavyweight minister. We need leaders who can fight and win; not handpicked.
